What is it about?
EWG is electron-withdrawing-group that will lower the electron density of the compound, thus might allowing a following nucleophilic reaction. Therefore, when the EWG is settled on the aromatics,a desirable nucleophilic addition might occur, that will break the aromaticity to form a dearomatized cyclic structures. Therefore such a strategy is a useful tool to access the complicated structures.
