What is it about?
This work develops a new approach of electrolyte design for lithium metal batteries, in which no organic solvent is needed. The phenomenon of meting point depression in mixtures was manipulated to enable molten salt electrolytes with relatively low melting point. The design goal is to remove eliminate organic components and thereby avoid their negative influence on the interphase chemistry, electrochemical stability and safety attributes of the electrolyte.

Why is it important?
Omitting organic solvents from electrolyte formulas can simultaneously enhance cycle life and mitigate flammability issues of high-energy Li metal batteries.
