Sirolimus as treatment for COVID-19

Antonio Romanelli

What is it about?

The recent outbreak of SARS-CoV-2 poses new challenges for medical research. An interesting aspect is the use of old drugs to treat SARS-CoV-2 infection. Despite drugs-related immunosuppressed patients could be prone to disease and severe clinical manifestation medical research focuses its attention on the rule on sirolimus, an mTOR inhibitor used as immunosuppression drug, as a possible therapeutic strategy.

Why is it important?

It is clear that clinical manifestation of COVID-19 is related to the abnormal immune response to SARS-CoV-2 infection. The use of drugs able to regulate the immune system, like sirolimus, is an exciting topic. Sirolimus could exert a protective effect against immune-related injury.

Perspectives

Sirolimus is available for the prevention of human allograft rejection in transplanted patients. If this drug could alter the clinical course of SARS-CoV-2 infection is under investigation.
