What is it about?
Many preterm infants need respiratory support after birth. The aim of the study was to determine the duration of mechanical ventilation (MV), which significantly increased the risk of adverse outcomes in VLBW infants. Based on the data from 1086 VLBW infants who were cared for with MV, we found that duration of MV longer than 60.5 hours was an independent risk factor of adverse outcomes in this population.

Why is it important?
Despite the important role of MV in reducing mortality in very preterm infants, its use is often associated with complications especially when applied for a prolonged period. However, it is not known if there is a minimal threshold period of MV after exceeding of which the risk of complications will significantly increase.
