What is it about?

The Van Brienenoord Bridge, in the Netherlands, is a 300m long steel arch bridge. It requires renovating and strengthening to provide another 100 years of service. The article describes the choice of renovating instead of replacing the bridge and the savings in materials through the re-use of large parts of the bridge.

Why is it important?

Lot's of aging bridges are being replaced with new bridges, however, reusing parts of the existing bridge reduces the demands on new materials. The construciton industry is a large emiter of CO2 thus extending the life of existing structures and reusing as much as possible reduces the impacts of the industry.

Perspectives

The Van Brienenoord Bridge is the longest span bridge in The Netherlands. It is an important part of the local highways network. The proposed renovation not only saves materials but also reduces the impact of the construction on the traffic. This is achieved through a staged replacement of the bridges with the main construciton works being done away from the current setting.
