What is it about?

The author , who has lived experience of being diagnosed with schizophrenia ,looks at the role of dignity in psychiatric treatment. She recounts the best and the worst examples from her own years of treatment and how psychiatrists and other health professionals can support their patients in defining themselves with dignity.

Why is it important?

This patient narrative is honest and insightful, underlining the significance of treating patients in ways that grow their dignity. It is not always easy, but it always worthwhile. Also the role of euthanasia for psychiatric illness is examined from a patient's perspective.

Perspectives

As a person with the diagnosis of schizophrenia, I hope that clinicians will see me in a way that is deeper than just my psychotic symptoms. Dignity is a vital part of recovery and resilience.
