It is not known whether Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) is a necessary level of care for all individuals on Assisted Outpatient Treatment in order to reduce hospital utilization. The authors compared hospitalization use in one community that triaged only some patients on Assisted Outpatient Treatment to ACT, according to perceived need. They found that participation in AOT did not have to be paired with ACT level services to achieve a reduction in hospital utilization.
