What is it about?

A well packaged community based services for children with emotional disturbance helps keep them in their home instead of the hospitals or residential treatment facilities. We used a propensity matched cohort to examined the community based service options and cost.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that the Medicaid waiver program that provides intensive “wraparound” services for children with serious emotional disturbance was associated with a 25% per member drop in spending for 12 months following discharge. A less expensive case management program slowed spending during the enrollment period but was not associated with long-term savings.

Perspectives

Conversations at the work place, working with mental health data daily, hearing news on mental health issues, chats over social media, and posts in various webpages have profoundly changed my perspective on cost and service availability to individuals and families dealing with mental health issues. I hope you find this article thought provoking, as the issues related to services and cost affects everyone. After all the money spend on public health programs is a burden we all share.
