Impulsivity is a Mediator between Suicidal Ideation and Traumatic Brain Injury among Veterans

What is it about?

Suicide has been the second leading cause of death in the military. Despite advances in access to psychiatric treatment for servicemembers and Veterans, rates have not declined. Traumatic brain injury has been shown to be a major risk factor for suicidality. We show in this study that impulsivity is a critical mediator in the known relationship between suicidality and traumatic brain injury, and could serve as an important future treatment target.

Our findings establish impulsivity as a mediator in the relationship between suicidality and traumatic brain injury, which could be an important future treatment target to lessen the rate of suicide among Veterans and servicemembers.
