What is it about?
Alcohol use and opioid misuse co-occur at high rates and are associated with many negative consequences. The current study looked at electronic health records in Veterans Affairs (VA) and found an association between alcohol-related brief intervention in primary care and a lower likelihood of future opioid-related outcomes (including prescription, diagnosis of opioid use disorder, and opioid-related hospitalizations). Population-based alcohol intervention may be a useful strategy for population-level opioid harm reduction.
