Clarification of rules and treatment options for hospitalized patients with Opioid Use Disorder

What is it about?

Rules governing the use of methadone and buprenorphine in the hospital setting are more flexible than for outpatient treatment but were unfortunately mischaracterized in an APA Official Action published in the August 2023 AJP, and suggested fewer options than what are available. In this letter we clarify the rules.

Why is it important?

Patients with Opioid Use Disorder who are treated with methadone or buprenorphine while hospitalized for other medical conditions are less likely to leave the hospital prematurely. Knowing the rules governing the use of these medications will help medical providers work with patients to choose the best treatment.
