What is it about?
Acute mania can be a life threatening disorder and commonly does not respond to pharmacological interventions. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) was been used as a standalone or adjunctive treatment of acute mania for more than 80 years. This review synthesizes the information accrued over this period on the efficacy and safety of ECT in mania, including its use in the related syndromes of delirious mania and mixed affective states. Recent research is also reviewed on optimizing ECT administration in patients with mania.
