What is it about?

This paper examines what young Maori and non-Maori youth want and expect from Maori language revitalisation as a policy process, including what language situation it should produce, who should be involved and even what language vitality means in their local context.

Why is it important?

Significant changes have taken place in Maori language management whereby primary oversight of policy has been handed from the government to a body of Maori representatives. This responded to a Waitangi Tribunal decision that language policy should be informed by "Maori ideas". This paper explores what those Maori ideas may be and how they may align or not with non-Maori ideas.
