What is it about?

The purpose of this chapter is to inform educators and teachers about the central role of communication in today's classroom, confronted with the actual reality of cultural diversity. That includes the cultural diversity of children but also of the educators. We are particularly interested in helping teachers understand the ways in which diversity influences classroom communication and learning orientations. Analyzing intercultural competencies, there will be a better understanding of student-teacher communication and interaction.

Why is it important?

The new way of implementing the intercultural education ideas is the culturally responsive teaching, presented in this paper with its most important characteristics. Teacher can use also different means of communication in classroom and that is why the author gave a great importance to exploring the communication skills that are indispensable to any teacher in his/her educational interaction. All these modern educational elements are included in a larger ecological perspective, which includes behavioral modification and a better integration in the environment. perhaps the most difficult challenge is that teacher education programs need to invite honest conversations about race, racism, privilege, marginalization, and oppression.

Perspectives

Frequently these topics invoke hostility, anger, guilt, and confusion. Although difficult, these conversations are necessary if we are going to help teachers face the complexity of today's diverse classroom. A teacher's approach about race, culture, and ethnicity is revealed in both subtle and explicit ways. Teachers' affective posture, the way they teach the facts of history, how they ask questions, how they discipline, who they call on, and who they talk to outside of class say about how they view culture and cultural issues. Once teachers acknowledge the role of culture in the instructional process, they are in a better position to meet the needs of all students in their classrooms.
